Heavy thunderstorm activity caused contaminated tailings to wash into residential areas. Working under emergency response measures, the team constructed straw containment dams and settling ponds; removed, transported, and placed tailings deposits; rebuilt existing dams to provide drainage for a 100-year flood event; recontoured surface drainage patterns; and collected soil samples for chemical analysis. The team planned logistical support and constructed a 7.2-mile haul route at elevations ranging from 10,600 to 11,800 feet and loaded and transported dolomitic waste rock from the remote Sherman Mine using 10-wheel and 35-ton articulated haul trucks.
